What is an SR22 or Certificate of Financial Responsibility?

What is SR22 Insurance?

An SR22 is a form of insurance that proves to the state that you have the required financial responsibility to drive. Most people are required to obtain an SR22 in order to reinstate their driving privileges after certain violations. COFR, or Certificate of Financial Responsibility, is another term for this type of insurance.

How SR22 Insurance Works

When you get an SR22, your insurance company will provide you with a document that you can submit to the state. This document shows that you have the right coverage and are able to drive again. You will need to keep your SR22 and auto insurance policy active for an approximate period of three years. If your insurance policy lapses, your insurer is legally obligated to inform the DMV. If this happens, your license will be suspended until you reinstate your insurance.

Getting an SR22

If you need an SR22, you can get one from your insurance company. Once you have your SR22, you will need to submit it to the state. The state will then lift the suspension of your license and you will be able to drive again.
